I like Mr. Grossman’s explanation, but roach has a point too. It’s not about sticking it to the man or protest or anything like that, it’s about modification. Taking a story that you know fairly well already and branching off from it, exploring the story using your own point of view, expanding on things you think would be interesting. And yes, sometimes that includes making Captain Kirk gay, but that’s usually in order to explore the possibility of a relationship with Spock.
On the other hand, I’ve always said that if the show doesn’t satisfy me, I’m going to write my own ending. And that’s a big part of it, I think. Wish fulfillment in the eyes of the fans.
